Winter Wildlife Viewing in Kentucky

Though there are plenty of fantastic indoor attractions across the state of Kentucky where you're guaranteed to stay warm and dry, there's really no reason to avoid the outdoors this winter. The quiet winter months are perfect for wildlife viewing across the state of Kentucky. Many of the State Parks have organized wildlife tours that make it easy to get outside and be adventurous. 

Here are a few of our favorite ways to enjoy Kentucky's various inhabitants in their natural habitats.

• Over 150 Bald Eagles stop in Kentucky each winter during their annual southerly migration. Kentucky start parks offer a wonderful series of Eagle watching weekends at various parks inclusing Kenlake State Resort Park, Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park, and Lake Barkley State Resort Park. • Watch part of the beautiful Sandhill crane migration at Barren River Lake State Resort Park
  

• Winter elk viewing tours are given at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park and Buckhorn Lake Resort State Park on most weekends from now through March. Elk were reintroduced to Kentucky in 1997, and since have grown to an astounding population of 10,000.
  

• Elk and bison also roam freely in the Elk and Bison Prairie, a 700 acre portion of Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area. You can also find deer, wild turkey and numerous other wildlife species in the prairie, which can be enjoyed via a 3.5 mile loop road.

If you'd rather spend a quiet day in nature yourself this winter, birdwatchers have a chance to catch a glimpse of woodpeckers, geese, ducks, loons, hawks and other species that become more visible after trees lose their leaves. Kentucky's wildlife management areas, such as Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, are prime land for birdwatching.
