The Daniel Boone National Forest stretches North to South through some of the most rugged and scenic parts of Kentucky, with picturesque forested slopes, dramatic sandstone cliffs, and narrow ravines. In fact, it's home to some of the country's most rugged terrain west of the Appalachian Mountains. Visitors flock to this forest for some of Kentucky's best hiking, rock climbing, fishing, boating, and general recreation. In total, there are more than 700,000 acres of wilderness to explore. As you put together your itinerary, here are some of our
favorite things to do in the Daniel Boone National Forest:
- The Red River Gorge is a unique, scenic natural area within the Daniel Boone National Forest. Known for its spectacular rock formations, including sandstone arches and towering cliffs, it attracts thousands of visitors each year. It's a wonderful place for hiking, camping, canoeing, wildlife viewing and more. Popular arches to visit are Sky Bridge, Grays Arch, Double Arch, Rock Bridge, Yahoo Arch, and Natural Arch.
- The Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail is considered the backbone of the trail system through the Daniel Boone National Forest. Many other trails hook up with this larger trail, offering plenty of opportunities for short day hikes or long backpacking adventures. In total, the trail begins in northern Kentucky on KY377 and travels nearly 290 miles to it's end in Tennessee.
- There are a variety of beautiful waterfalls within the National Forest as well, and springtime is a great time to see these raging waters. Our favorites are Vanhook Falls, Dog Slaughter Falls, and Princess/Lick Creek Falls.
- Take a scenic drive along the winding Red River Gorge National Scenic Byway or Zilpo National Forest Scenic Byway, where you'll enjoy unbeatable views of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Along the way, you'll drive through tunnels, and spot natural arches, waterfalls, and some of the states most scenic vistas.
- Visit the sparkling blue waters of Lake Cumberland, a popular tourist and house-boating destination in Kentucky.
