As the weather starts to change and the heat of the summer is giving way to cool evenings and crisp mornings, Fall begins to make an appearance in Kentucky.
Across the state, leaves are starting to show crimson edges. There's never a bad time to plan a weekend getaway and enjoy a natural festival of colors. With over 12 million acres of forest, You won't find a better place to watch the vivid colors of autumn on full display. Fall in Kentucky is something you won't want to miss. Kentucky is home to dozens of scenic drives that offer stunning views right from the window of your car. Going on a scenic drive is top on the list of safe and relaxing fall activities.

DANIEL BOONE NATIONAL FOREST

Made up of multiple districts, Daniel Boone National Forest in a massive 1.2 million acres in size. Due to its size, it has hundreds of roads that criss-cross the forested land and rolling hills. In fall, these hills are decorated in the colors of autumn. While you're here, don't miss out on the opportunity to take a hike on one of the many trails in the Daniel Boone National Forest. No matter what part of the forest you visit, you'll find yourself surrounded in the beautiful colors of fall.

RED RIVER GORGE

As its name suggests, Red River Gorge was formed as the Red River carved through sandstone, forming a gorge. The Red River Gorge area is 29,000 acres in size and offers unique geological features, including over 150 sandstone arches. In addition to the geological uniqueness, the fall brings out bright colors and makes already-beautiful panoramic views unforgettable. Take full advantage of the great views by traveling along the Red River Gorge Scenic Byway.

WILDERNESS ROAD HERITAGE HIGHWAY

Traveling along the Wilderness Road Heritage Highway will acquaint you with the natural beauty of Kentucky. Passing through parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest, travelers will see hills, rocks formations, caves, streams, and more as they drive along this historic and culturally significant route. WOODLANDS TRACE NATIONAL SCENIC BYWAY

Enjoy the brilliant foliage of autumn along the Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway. This road passes easily through the rolling terrain of the area and offers plenty of places to stop and stretch your legs. Look out for the local Elk and Bison on their 700-acre reserve. The byway spans 43 miles and can be accessed from the south on Highway 79 near Dover, TN and from the North on Interstate 24 near Grand Rivers, KY. BIG SOUTH FORK SCENIC RAILWAY

For those looking for a unique fall experience, Big Fork Scenic Railway might be just the ticket. The Big South Fork Railway was an important route for the logging and coal industries. Though no longer in use, you'll get a taste of the life led by early Kentuckians. You'll enjoy a leisurely train ride (a mine tour and lunch, if you'd like) in this 3-hour experience. The train cars are open-air (heated in the winter), so you can inhale the fresh forest air and smell the earthy scent of the woods as you travel along, amazed by the sights and sounds of autumn.
